Kaho’olawe Brush Fire: “Not expected to stop anytime soon”

At about 9:50 am Saturday morning, MFD received reports of a brush fire occurring on the island of Kahoolawe. Air 1 was dispatched to respond with a Battalion Chief on board. It was confirmed that there was an active brush fire located on the southwest end of the island at Kealaikahiki.


As of Sunday morning 10:30 am, officials estimate 2,635 acres still actively burning. Fire officials said in a press release that the fire was “Not expected to stop anytime soon”.

No active firefighting will be taking place due to uncertainties associated with unexploded ordinance. No information is available at this time regarding damages.
